A study was performed on atomic coherence-induced effects in multilevel systems. The Kerr nonlinearity in electromagnetically induced transparent (EIT) media was also studied. It was found that the Kerr nonlinear index of refraction of a three-level EIT system for a probe beam was significantly increased near resonance compared with a two-level atomic system.
