Mannich reaction in water phase catalyzed by new Brønsted acidic functionalized ionic liquids

A novel functionalized ionic liquid 3-N, N, N-trimetylammoniumpropanesulfonic acid hydrogen sulfate is prepared and its structure is confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and MS spectra. The ionic liquid bears a functional group and has a quaternary ammonium salt group used as phase-transfer catalyst. Mannich reaction of aromatic aldehydes, ketones and aromatic amines is catalyzed by the ionic liquid at room temperature in water phase with 67%-92% yields. The ionic liquid is reused 6 times without noticeable decrease of the catalytic activity.
