Canadian wheat straw: Variability and the effects of outdoor storage on straw and pulp properties

Bales of straw were stored in the field, without direct contact with soil for up to one year after harvest. Soda pulps produced from these straws were compared with pulps produced from freshly harvested straws. Prolonged outdoor straw storage had significant effects on straws and pulps, including decreases in straw ash content, pulp freeness, average fibre length, coarseness and tear strength. Many of the effects of storage on pulps were related to the fines content, which increased with straw storage time. It was concluded that it is possible to store straw outdoors for periods of up to one year with only minor losses in pulp quality.
