A growth in Italian paper industry was reported in year 2000 as compared to 1999. The production in the industry increased by 5.0% resulting in 9.0 million tonnes. The demand reached 11 million tonnes with an increase of 6.2%. The growth in the paper sector was due to strong Italian economy which showed a growth of 2.9% compared to 1999. The companies invested in the tissue sector, concentrating on eastern European countries.
