A control system for a thermoprocessing installation must meet stringent requirements in terms of safety, availability and cost-effectiveness. The electrotechnical equipment for these installations must comply with a number of relevant EU Directives and standards; these must also be incorporated in the design of the circuit engineering and the hardware and software. This article describes these required parameters. It also explains how the EU Directives and standards relate to one another and is concerned with the implementation of the requirements into the design of a process control system. Furthermore, it gives examples of errors and how to avoid them when integrating safety functions.
