This investigation attempts to clarify the effects of strong vertical and static magnetic fields (SMFs) of 11-15 T on Xenopus laevis development and on Xotx2 (an important regulator of fore- and midbrain morphogenesis) and Xag1 (essential for cement gland formation) gene expression. Results showed that (1) a strong SMF significantly retarded normal development and induced microcephaly; two heads; abnormal cement glands and multiple malformations; indicating that SMF inhibits normal embryonic development; (2) a strong SMF suppressed Xotx2 and Xag1 expression. © 2006 The Japan Society of Applied Physics;
