Smart home installation system can be an important part of smart grid application correlating to convenience utilization of electrical devices at home. The proposed design related to the smart home installation system is mainly the microcontroller AT89S51 performance embedded with infrared receiver detector in the input port and relay driver in the output port. The infrared receiver detector receives modulated signal from conventional remote control; while the relay driver operates the relay that is connected to specified load. Our proposed design is simple and low cost in terms of configuration and additional components, suitable for the high capacity system and adapted for the combined operation between the remote control and conventional switch operations. Also, the expansion to the high capacity load system is possible by replacing the relay with contactors with high rating current. Several testings have been performed which are mainly focused on the hardware and software design. The demonstration of proposed design shows a proper performance in real-time application. © 2014 ISSN 1881-803X.
