Ternary phase diagrams of systems of aluminum - rare-earth metals

Heat- and corrosion resistance of Al alloys can be improved by REM alloying. The ternary systems of Al with REM are investigated by the methods of x-ray diffraction, microstructural and differential thermal analyses. It is ascertained that the crystallization of only single ternary compound in the Al-rich region takes place in systems of Al-Mg-Sc (Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd). Propagation of segregation field, observed in Li-REM binary systems, in the interior of Al-Li-REM ternary system is ascertained. Ternary compounds in these systems are not crystallized. The isothermal sections of Al-Zn-REM system showed that the MZn2Al2 compounds are crystallized which are in two-phase equilibrium with the Zn- and Al-based solid solutions.
