The author investigates the current state of desktop videoconferencing by exploring the criteria for effective Web-based delivery, the communication requirements for effective desktop videoconferencing, including basic software and hardware requirements. Although the author provides a corporate training perspective, the information provided on desktop videoconferencing could be useful for higher education institutions that are considering adapting this technology in their online distance learning environments. © 2001 Elsevier Science Inc.
