A polycarboxylate superplasticizer water-reducing agent (PCWR) was prepared via etherification and carboxylation with maltodextrin as a raw material. The molecular structure and morphology were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The degree of substitution (Ds) of PCWR, adsorption performance, rheological behavior of cement paste, cement paste and concrete performance were measured, and the corresponding mechanism was analyzed. The results show that a greater DS of etherification has a better thickening effect. The carboxyl groups in PCWR molecules increases the adsorption amount of the compound, hence enhancing the dispersive performance. Compared to naphthalene superplasticizer, PCWR has a prominent effect on the increase of water-reducing and the improvement of the state of concrete. © 2017, Editorial Department of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society.
