摘要
Because of particularity of the control system and topological structure of flexible DC grids based on half bridge modular multilevel converters (HB-MMC), the fault current rises fast and its peak value is very high when a short-circuit fault happens in DC transmission line. As a result, the semiconductor devices of the converters face danger of easy destruction. In addition, the DC fault current has no natural zero-crossing point, increasing difficulty for DC circuit breaker to cut off fault current. Therefore it is a challenge for protection system to keep safety of DC grids. Based on the topological structure and DC side fault characteristics of flexible DC grids, this paper systematically analyzes recent research development of protection of flexible DC grids, including DC fault current limiting methods and DC side protection principles, emphasizing on protection principles of DC lines. This paper also discusses current main challenges of fault handling and protection technologies, and foresees future research direction. © 2018, Power System Technology Press. All right reserved.
