The management of Karst in Switzerland: Methods, tools and applications

Carbonates represent up to 20% of Switzerland's outcrops, most of them being karstified. The high permeability and intrinsic spatial heterogeneity characterizing karst environments require specific tools to address geotechnical and conservation issues. KARSYS was specifically developed to provide a pragmatic approach in addressing karst related issues including groundwater reserves, natural hazards, building works and geothermal resources. Here, we present the general concepts behind the KARSYS approach and illustrate it with case studies from Porrentruy (JU) and Ligerz (BE) as well as from the cantons of St.Gallen and Fribourg. © 2018 Ver.
