Jefferson Smurfit reported a net profit of Euro 90 million ($82 million) for the first six months of year 2000, which represents a massive 151% increase on the same period the previous year. Net sales in the first half came in at Euro 2,206 million, up 31% on 1999. The improved results reflect strong demand in Europe, recovery in Latin America markets and increased earnings from the company's US associate, smurfit-Stone Container Corporation.
