In the process of urbanization in China, the urban energy system has common issues such as low comprehensive energy efficiency, insufficient clean energy proportion, and high carbon-emission reduction pressure. It is of great significance to establish urban Energy Internet demonstration model projects to promote the construction of urbanization in China. The urban energy system of China is different from other countries, and the construction and demonstration of its demonstration projects are also particular. To this end, this paper firstly reviews the exploration and practice in the construction and demonstration of domestic and foreign Energy Internet demonstration projects, and emphatically introduces the exploration of the new Energy Internet demonstration projects in two typical characteristic towns in Jiangsu Yangzhong and Tianjin Beichen in China. On this basis, the general problems of urban Energy Internet demonstration projects in China are further refined. Combined with the present situation and challenges of the construction of the new power system in China, this paper proposes relevant suggestions for promoting urban Energy Internet construction in China in the future. © 2022 Automation of Electric Power Systems Press.
