This paper reviews the development process of ecological restoration in the western China arid and semi⁃arid coal mine area, encouraged and guided by Academician Minggao Qian. The team focused on the key scientific issues of water⁃soil⁃ecological protection in coal development, to clarify the core of arid and semi⁃arid ecological restoration in western China is the protection and utilization of water resources. According to the main characteristics of the geological environment and modern mining in western China, it is fully understood and practiced from the way of thinking, technical meth⁃ ods and restoration modes. The key technologies of water resources protection and utilization and eco⁃ logical restoration in western China have been developed, which have improved the utilization rate of water resources in mining areas and promoted the effectiveness of ecological restoration. We have ini⁃ tially established a team capable of fighting for environmental governance and ecological restoration in the arid and semi⁃arid coal mine area, realizing the harmonious development of green coal mining and ecological security. © 2023 China University of Mining and Technology.
