Based on the unique electronic structures of rare earth ions, the photoluminescence of rare earth metal-organic frameworks has the advantages of sharp emission peaks, high quantum yields and long lifetimes, which was studied as optical sensing materials for specific chemicals. Thanks to the high coordination numbers and abundant coordination modes of rare earth ions, rare earth metal-organic frameworks possess structural diversities and turnabilities, which can match well with various chemicals in both structures and energy levels and hence is the basis of their sensing functions. The recognition of isomers, especially for the fast detection of specific isomers, is of great value in chemical and pharmaceutical fields. In this review, the sensing properties of rare earth metal-organic frameworks for isomers with specific functions were summarized, and the related sensing mechanisms were discussed. © 2021, Editorial Office of Journal of the Chinese Society of Rare Earths.
