摘要
Neuroscience is one of the most rapidly developing disciplines in the 21st century. It integrates biolo⁃ gy,materials, physics and informatics, and is a new interdisciplinary discipline. The combination of neurosci⁃ ence and optical technology has promoted the emergence of new bioengineering technologies such as optogenet⁃ ics, which has become indispensable tools to explore the relationship between neural structure, neuronal activi⁃ ty and body behavior. However, the excitation light of photosensitive materials required for optogenetics is usual⁃ ly ultraviolet light and visible light, which has some bottleneck problems such as low penetration depth of tissue and high phototoxicity, which greatly limits its application and development in living organisms. Upconversion luminescent nanoparticles(UCNPs)have attracted much attention in biomedical detection, diagnosis and intra⁃ operative navigation because of their unique 4f electronic structure and their ability to emit ultraviolet light-visi⁃ ble light with adjustable wavelength in response to near-infrared light. This review summarizes the representative applications of UCNPs based functional materials in the field of neuroscience, focusing on the works about neu⁃ romodulation, neuroimaging and treatment of neurological diseases based on rare earth functional materials. Fi⁃ nally, this review is prospected from the perspectives of materials, chemistry and biomedicines, and shows the path to do interdisciplinary research between materials and neuroscience, which is expected to promote the inter⁃ action of different disciplines and promote the technological innovation and development of neuroscience,in or⁃ der to provide effective methods for solving major neurological problems. © 2023 Chinese Society of Rare Earths.
