The Enlightenment in the early Catholic theology in Tubingen

Theology in the early 19 th century had to come to terms with the shocking experiences of the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the Secularization of 1803/06. For a long time, this resulted in an ultramontane condemnation of the Enlightenment. It is important to counter this narrow view: In the theological no man's land after 1800, not only early ultramontane theologians such as Joseph Gorres, but also the Tubingen theologians Johann Sebastian von Drey, Johann Baptist Hirscher and Johann Adam Mohler found a theological language that should be judged less on the basis of whether it was (still) Enlightenment, but rather on how it dealt with what had emerged from the Enlightenment.
