摘要
Scientific drilling was conducted at a craterlike depression located in an active hydrothermal field in the Okinawa Trough. Lithology and mineralogy of the obtained sediment cores were studied by visual core description, measurements of physical properties, XRD (X-ray diffractometer) analysis, and EPMA (electron probe microanalyzer) analysis. Sulfide and sulfate mineralization was recognized only in the layer from 50 to 65 mbsf (meters below the seafloor), which was overlaid by thick pile of pumice gravel or pumiceous tuff. Nevertheless, we found several similarities in their mineralogical and chemical signatures to sulfide minerals collected from hydrothermal chimney and mound structure in the adjacent to the drilled site. These results are attributed to subseafloor mineralization within a volcanic conduit.
