Single-component white-light emitters have attracted increasing attention due to their advantages of convenient fabrication and energy conservation. However, blue phosphorescent materials are not easily obtained. Here, we develop a new strategy to realize white light emission in a Cu(i) cluster (1). 1 displays effective blue phosphorescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield (phi) of 68.5%, attributed to the good dispersion of the phosphor centres. A new yellow emission peak at 580 nm is observed after grinding, which combines with the blue phosphorescence to form white light emission (phi = 17.29%) with the CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.36). A white light-emitting diode (WLED) is fabricated as well, which shows high performance with a satisfactory colour rendering index of 81.5 and correlated colour temperature of 6856 K.
