Experimental study on shear behavior of simply supported prestressed concrete beams with rectangular web openings

To evaluate the shear performance of prestressed concrete (PC) beams with web openings, the monotonic static loading tests of simply supported reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to concentrated load were conducted. Three solid-web RC beams and 16 RC beams with varying parameters of length and height of web opening, and prestressing force were tested. Based on the experimental results, the crack patterns, failure modes, strain distribution, deflection and shear capacity etc. were investigated. It can be concluded that the effect of prestressing force on the improvement of shear stiffness is not significant. However, it is beneficial for postponing the crack propagation and increasing the height of concrete compression zone, which lead to a 5.26%~24.88% improvement of shear capacity of RC beams, especially for beams with web openings. Based on the experimental results, the formulas for calculating the shear capacity of PC beams with web openings were suggested. The proposed formulas show a good agreement with the experimental data. © 2019, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures. All right reserved.
