摘要：
This article explores the ways Christian missionaries in colonial New Spain resorted to the arts to promote conversions, sponsor individual faith, exercise devotion, and intensify rituals. More specifically, it investigates the relationship between the native populations and the missionaries, showing that religious art was commonly experienced within an atmosphere marked by power and fear.
