摘要
Backgound and Objectives: the need for this research is justified, as when compared with men, women are more susceptible to food insecurity, as a consequence of the uncertain access to income. Considering the relevance of nutrition, socio-economic status and access to health care, this research will contribute to the quality of life, considering that food insecurity can decrease the level of well-being and cause food insecurity. Consequently, this research aims to establish the association between food insecurity and the socioeconomic profile of women treated in primary healthcare institutions of Santa Maria/RS, while assessing the cost of living. Methods: descriptive quantitative study with primary data collection, carried out with adult and elderly women treated in primary healthcare institutions in Santa Maria/RS. Data collection took place from March to April 2013. The researcher used a questionnaire created by herself during the interview and the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA). Results: Overall, 100 women aged 19 to 77 years participated in the study, with an mean age of 44.13 (+/- 16.33) years. The most prevalent marital status was common-law marriage, 55% and the most prevalent occupation was housewife, 31%. The highest cost of living was food, with 79%. Conclusion: Although the level of schooling was equal to or greater than eight years of study, the presence of mild food insecurity can be observed.
