Error in diagnosis of mandibular extraoral fistula: a case report

OBJECTIVES. The aim of this study is to highlight the noteworthy frequency of diagnostic mistakes concerning odontogenic extraoral draining fistulas. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A case of misdiagnosis is described, in which the nature of a mandibular odontogenic fistula was not immediately recognized. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS. Given the high incidence of diagnostic error in such cases, as reported in the literature, it would be advisable for specialists who visit and operate in the head and neck region, to work at achieving an integrated approach for the sake of the patient's wellbeing given such a peculiar, unique and complex anatomic area.
