Materials Science Research in India (1993-2001): A Scientometric Study

The paper reports on the status of Materials Science research in India during 1993-01, with metrics on its publication size and growth rate, and discussing its media of communication, strength and weakness in the areas of research, quality of research output, nature of collaboration, and institutional productivity. The study finds that India's publications output in Materials Science has been growing steadily at about 7% per year. Biomaterials, coatings & films, composites, characterization & testing, and textiles are the fast growing areas of research in Materials Science research with annual growth rate ranging between 18.4% to 31.8%. India's publications output in the field of Materials Science and as appearing in high impact journals is still not very significant.
