Relatively few people experienced firsthand the trans-formation of cartography from the era of green eye shades and quill pens to today’s digital cartographic data bases, powerful personal computers, and turnkey automated systems. Three individuals who participated in and helped shape the academic side of that revolution have shared their perceptions of it with us in this volume. I have been asked to add my brief comments regarding the development of the cartography program at the University of Kansas to those provided by George Jenks. © 1991 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
