Longevity: beyond biology. Socio-cultural aspects

Through this article, I invite the reader to take a second look at the ageing process and old age as a phenomenon and as a subject matter, based on understanding longevity as a revolutionary change of the century. This is carried out from an anthropological standpoint and through a biographical, sociocultural perspective, as well as from the construction of new age identities. Longevity holds a series of consequences that translates into a phenomenon of disciplinary interest that goes beyond the chrono-biological reality of living longer; it is a new reality that entails the creation of new models of old age and of the expectations facing advanced age. Within the aging process, longevity thereby comprises a phenomenon that has important sociocultural implications and, thus, becomes of interest for the social sciences.
