In this paper, scopes of Tenses and Aspects with regard to nominal terms in discourse, and especially in sentences, are treated in a flexible categorial grammar. In the first part, scope phenomena are presented and discussed. In the second part, two kinds of flexibility are presented, a categorial grammar with flexible categories for TENSE, and a categorial grammar with a fixed category for TENSE, but with flexible type assignment in the language of logical representation. It is shown that both kinds give rise to different scope phenomena. Both kinds of flexibility can be combined in a 'hyper’ flexible categorial grammar. © 1992, Walter de Gruyter. All rights reserved.
