The arithmetic involved in constructing control charts for variables (i. e. x,s, and R charts) is really quite simple; but unless it is done regularly, it can take several minutes to figure out which factors to use, and multiply these by the appropriate process parameters. Writing a calculator program which will do this in just a few seconds provides a useful introduction to programmables, and raises some interesting problems relating to calculation of some factors used. The solution to these problems and the resulting program is the subject of the article.
