The experimental high temperature reactor AVR 15, developed by the Hochtemperatur-Reaktorbau Gesellschaft (HRB), formerly BBK, has been operating since 1967; the THTR 300 is under construction, and the HTR 1160 is at the planning stage. AVR 15 has provided the basic experience for this reactor concept. THTR 300 will provide the experience for large high temperature reactors. This prototype nuclear power plant represents an essential step forward on the way towards realization of the high temperature reactor line. The Uentrop reactor site conditions are favorable for both construction and operation. The construction period is largely determined by the introduction of new technologies, e. g. for the prestressed concrete pressure vessel and for the shut-down and refueling system. Nuclear safety features of the power plant are particularly attractive due to the low excess reactivity of the reactor, the low radioactivity content of the individual circuits, and due to the complete integration of the helium primary circuit and the core in the prestressed concrete pressure vessel.
