NTT is developing a phosphoric acid fuel cell energy system for telecommunications use to reduce energy costs and preserve the environment. This paper reports that methanol and liquefied propane gas are suitable emergency fuels for fuel cells. and that methanol and liquefied propane gas, as well as pipeline gas which is normally used as the fuel, can be steam-reformed in the same reformer if it contains the Ni-Al2O3 catalyst The results of fuel substitution tests demonstrate that fuel substitution of liquefied propane gas for pipeline gas and vice versa can be performed by controlling the heat supply, fuel supply, and steam supply to the reformer.
