摘要
A very important prerequisite for learning is the correct use of language in such a way that both teacher and student will use the same terms similarly and understand them in the same way. Many scientists regard mathematics as the language of science and therefore, when the teachers use mathematical expressions as definitions, they feel that they contribute much to their students understanding of the subject matter. Thermodynamics is one of the subjects that falls under this category. It is true that the mathematical definition of enthalpy or entropy changes, for example, are the most precise way of treating them. We found, however, that for young students the use of words and schematic representations is necessary in order to help them get an understanding of what is hidden behind the equations. Only after this insight is achieved by the student one can start to use the mathematical shorthand.
