Loss mechanism in silver film ion-exchanged single-mode channel waveguides is studied. The main loss mechanism characteristic of this technique is identified to result from lack of adhesion of the silver film to the underlying glass. A loss of 0.15 dB/cm was measured in a photoresist masked silver film ion-exchanged channel waveguide fabricated with improved adhesion.
