As a group the articles in this special issue constitute a rather different approach to environmental issues than typically found in economics jornals today, one that embodies significant elements of social economics. These articles also suggest essential links between social economics and the newly emergent field of ecological economics currently being pioneered by members of the International Society for Ecological Economics. A few brief introductory remarks are thus in order contrasting conventional and the alternative views of environmental issues presented here and elaborating on the potential relationship between social and ecological economics. © 1995 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
