A low-cost car for rich countries: Logan and European integration

The Dacia Logan is Europe's first low cost car. Its success, like the range of low-cost vehicles that it generated, has been extraordinary, although it is noteworthy that this occurred in Western Europe and not in the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) for which the car was designed The article connects this paradox to two complementary phenomena relating to the CEECs' integration into the European Union: the stagnating new car market in these countries; and their transformation into low-cost export production bases. It also discusses how German premium manufacturers' cultural and political hegemony structures the European automotive industry's transformation.
