Technology for converting PET beverage bottles into useful intermediates for the synthesis of unsaturated polyesters is described. Raw-material cost savings, reduced processing costs from faster reaction times, higher yields, comparable physical properties, and conservation of petroleum-based chemicals are incentives for recycling PET. Properties of unsaturated polyesters obtained by recycling polyethylene terephthalate bottles are tabulated.
