INFLUENCE OF MICROSTRUCTURE ON THE THERMOMECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ALUMINA CERAMICS

摘要
The effect of microstructure parameters on fracture and thermal shock resistance of alumina ceramics was studied. As it was demonstrated, a specific range of Al2O3 grain size exists, in which an increase of resistance to fracture is observed. This region corresponds to the maximum density of microcracks with length close to the l(m) value from Hasselman's minimum curve DELTA-T = f(l0). The interaction of the crack front with microcracks existing in alumina ceramics is a possible mechanism of observed toughening.
