Accurate measurements of the decay of the 146.96 nm resonance radiation in Xe are presented for pressures ranging from 0.002 to 10 Torr. A comparison with different theories is made, clearly demonstrating the inability of the complete frequency redistribution theory to describe the experimental results in the whole pressure region. A better agreement is found with the analytical solutions based on a partial frequency redistribution theory. Monte-Carlo calculations, using the partial frequency redistribution function generators of Jong-Sen Lee, have been carried out, reproducing the experimental results in a satisfactory way.
