A SELF-CONSISTENT model is developed for the finite deformation of rate-dependent polycrystals. The formulation presented rigorously extends HUTCHINSON'S (Proc. R. Soc. (Lond). A319, 247, 1970) implementation of HILL's (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 13, 89, 1965a) theory to include finite deformations and material strain rate sensitivity. The present framework is similar to the recent formulation of NEMAT-NASSER and OBATA (Proc. R. Soc. (Lond.) A407, 343, 1986), except that the averaging operations are approached from a different viewpoint. Useful formulae for the numerical implementation of the theory are also presented.
