Within Hofmannsthal's oeuvre, which is characterized by a particularly strong relationship with the heritage of previous centuries, the Greek antiquity constitutes doubtless a major source of themes and motifs. Yet the Antiquity seems to have lost the normative role that it usually had in the humanistic culture, and becomes just one of the many traditions that are woven together in the modernity. The article thematises this circumstance, such as it is at the centre of the essay Augenblicke in Griechenland: the ancient Greece, as a product of numerous cultural layers, is not immediately available, except through of a sudden mystical epiphany.
