FUTURE OF HEMISPHERIC INTEGRATION - MERCOSUR AND THE INITIATIVE FOR THE AMERICA

After paying attention to the main advances and difficulties of the process of integration between Argentina and Brazil initiated in 1986, the main issues raised in the Mercosur project as part of unilateral trade deregulation are discussed Asuming that industrial reestructuring is going to be the name of the game, some mid term scenarios are then suggested In this context, the main reasons, pros and cons for Argentina and Brazil of an eventual free trade agreement with the United States as envisaged in the Enterprise for the Americas Initiative are examined.
