Ethnographer and Missionary, Missionary and Ethnographer: Alfred Metraux and John Arnott

The paper explores the relationship between Swiss ethnographer Alfred Metraux and Scottish missionary John Arnott of the South American Missionary Society, which lasted almost a decade. The reciprocal influence between these individuals is described with regard to both religious and academic factors. The paper also provides an analysis of the historical, social and political context of the Anglican missions in the Argentinian Chaco during 1933-1939, when Metraux did his ethnographic fieldwork.
