Tests are described concerning the effect of the honing spindle stroke upon the cylindriscity error of honed tubes and pipes, the results of which are explained by mathematical investigations. The conicity occurring as a result of excessively large strokes is explained using a static model of the contact conditions between the honing tool and the workpiece. It can be greatly avoided by a stroke asymmetrical to the workpiece center or by a proposed special honing tool design.
