In the field of industrial furnace design, thermal studies are of great interest in order to interpret the behavior of furnace systems and to achieve effective technical improvements. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be a powerful tool for investigating the effects of heat transfer mechanisms and is able to uncover potentials for design and process optimization in industrial furnaces. In this study, a detailed CFD model of a large-scale walking beam furnace was developed, which takes into account gas radiation, turbulent combustion as well as the movement of the heated steel material inside the furnace chamber. © 2019 Verlag Stahleisen GmbH.
